European Commission slams Apple for back taxes, sets sights on Google

The European Commission has just completed a three-year investigation into Apple’s taxes, and they’ve determined that the benefits the company receives from Irish banking entities are illegal. As a result, Apple will have to pay 13 billion Euros to Ireland, and a precedent is now set that puts other massive multinational companies like Google in a tight spot.

What’s interesting is that Ireland has no interest in collecting the money. Finance minister Michael Noonan has gone on record saying, “I disagree profoundly with the Commission… The decision leaves me with no choice but to seek cabinet approval to appeal. This is necessary to defend the integrity of our tax system; to provide tax certainty to business; and to challenge the encroachment of EU state aid rules into the sovereign member state competence of taxation.”


Apple is unsurprisingly in the same boat claiming, “Apple follows the law and pays all of the taxes we owe wherever we operate. We will appeal and we are confident the decision will be overturned.” The company went further to say that the Commission’s case is needlessly aggressive and harmful to the economy

The Commission is standing their ground, stating that Apple’s taxable profits “did not correspond to economic reality.” The current corporate tax rate in Ireland is 12.5 percent. In 2003, the European Commission concluded that Apple paid a mere 1 percent in taxes, and that in 2014 they paid less than .01 percent.

The Commission says that all they are doing is requiring Apple to pay taxes that they would have owed anyway. “The Commission’s investigation concluded that Ireland granted illegal tax benefits to Apple, which enabled it to pay substantially less tax than other businesses over many years.”

The reason that Ireland doesn’t want Apple to have to pay these back taxes is that their leniency on international businesses drives a lot of commerce through their system. In the aftermath of this Apple decision, the Commission is gearing up to investigate Google in a similar capacity.

Updates to your Android apps will now be up to 50 percent smaller

Google has created a welcome modification to its Play Store app delivery system that should help to speed up updates and reduce information consumption by making them smaller.

An updated algorithm can cut back the size of updates by as much as 50 % by downloading solely the specified changes to APK files and merging them with existing files – presenting a much more economical system than previously enforced.

For approximately 98 % of app updates from the Play Store, only changes (deltas) to APK files are downloaded and integrated with the present files, reducing the size of updates. we tend to recently extended a delta algorithmic program, bsdiff that additional reduces patches by up to 50 % or additional compared to the previous algorithmic program


Bsdiff is specifically targeted to provide a lot of efficient deltas of native libraries by taking advantage of specific ways that during which compiled native code changes between versions. Google first rolled out support for delta updates – those which includes just the change – all the way back is 2012 but the latest algorithm improve the system quite dramatically.

The Internet of Things will replace mobile phones as most connected device in 2018

Internet of thing sensors and device are expected to exceed mobile phone as the largest category of connected devices in 2018. Growing at a 23% compound annual growth rate from 2015 to 2021 according to an Ericsson report.

Internet of things (IOT) sensors and devices are expected to exceed mobile phones as the largest category of connected devices in 2018, growing at a 23% compound annual growth (CAGR) from 2015 to 2021.

By 2021 there will be 9B mobile subscriptions, 7.7B mobile broadband subscriptions, and 6.3B smartphone subscriptions. Worldwide smartphone subscription will grow at a 10.6% CAGR from 2015 to 2012 with Asia/Pacific (APAC) gaining 1.7B new subscribers alone.

These and insight are from the 2016 Ericsson mobility report (PDF, no opt-in). Ericcson has provided a summary of the findings and a series of interactive graphics here. Ericsson created the subscription and traffic forecast baseline this analysis is based on using historical data from a variety of internal and external sources. Ericsson also validated trending analysis through the use of their planning models. Future development is estimated based on macro economic trends, user trends (researched by Ericsson Consumer Lab), market maturity, technology development expectations and documents such as industry analyst reports, on a national or regional level, together with internal assumptions and analysis.

Ericsson predicts there will a total approximately 28B connected devices worldwide by 2021, With nearly 16B related to IOT. Global mobile broadband subscriptions will reach 7.7B by 2021, accounting for 85% of all subscriptions. Ericsson is predicating there will be a 9B mobile 7.7B internet user by coming flow year of 2021. and 6.3B smartphone subscriptions by 2021 as well.

Apple Seeds Sixth Beta of watchOS 3 to Developers

Apple today seeded the sixth beta of an upcoming watchOS 3 update to developers for testing purposes, one week after seeding the fifth beta and two months after first unveiling watchOS 3 at its 2016 Worldwide Developers Conference.



The sixth watchOS 3 beta can be downloaded through the dedicated Apple Watch app on an iPhone by going to General --> Software update.

To install the update, the Apple Watch needs to have 50 percent battery, it must be on the Apple Watch charger, and it must be in range of the iPhone. watchOS 3 also requires an iPhone running iOS 10 to install.

watchOS 3 introduces significant changes to the watchOS operating system. A new dock, accessible by pressing the side button, replaces Glances and houses 10 favorite first and third-party apps. Apps in the dock are kept continually up to date and are stored in memory for a new instant launch ability.

New Activity Sharing options allow Apple Watch owners to share workout and activity information with friends, and there are new fitness features for Wheelchair users. A Breathe app guides users through daily deep breathing sessions, an Apple Watch can unlock a Mac, and Apple has added apps for Reminders, Find My Friends, and accessing one's heartbeat.

Additional watch faces support complications, there are three new watch faces to choose from, including a new Activity watch face, and an SOS feature will make sure an option to get help in an emergency is always right at your fingertips. On the iPhone, there's a new Face Gallery for customizing Apple Watch faces, and watchOS 3 allows the Apple Watch to be located via Find My iPhone for the first time.

Fuchsia: New OS on which Google is working.


Google’s Engineers started working on new Operating System called Fuchsia.  One of the code submission comments was the cryptic phrase:”Pink + Purple == Fuchsia(a new operating system)” .

Now the question arrises that: what is it for? Why google is  investing in it ? What is the goal of this project? but honestly no body knows answer of these questions except Google. But we grab some clues.

Fuchsia uses the (L)ittle (K)ernal and Magenta. LK is small operating System suited to small embedded devices and bootloaders.

Now you might be thinking that what is Little kernel : Little Kernal is a boot loader that perform the basic task of hardware intialization, reading the Linux Kernal and ramdisk from storage and loading it upto RAM, setting it initial registers and command line arguments for Linux Kernal and jumps to the Kernal. “Android Bootloader is also LK bootloader”. It also Supports flashing and recovery.

LK runs in 32 bit mode even in 64 bit architecture.

Magenta is higher up the food chain. It is designed for the system which have more memory and which is peripheral. For example, Magenta has the concept of a process whereas LK does not, Magenta has a user mode (where user programs run) where LK does not . So It seems that Fuchsia is Magenta built on the top of LK.

Current source code include lots of interesting stuff like support of Dart, JSON, logging, SSL, Clang, LLVM, Rust and special version of fortune- a simple program that displays  a pseudo-random message.

According to code commit comments from the flutter project, it looks like a lot work has been done to get flutter to get Fuchsia. Now lets see What is flutter: It a new project to help developers to build height performance, heigh fidelity mobile apps for iOS and android from a single code base.

May be Fuchsia is replacement of Linux in android or replacement for android itself. So there are many guesses about it. But no one knows that for which project google is making this new Operating system.

New Qualcomm-targeted android security bug is according to place '900 million' devices at risk. Here's what you would like to understand.

ONCE AGAIN, IT'S ANDROID SECURITY PANIC SEASON. THIS NEWS BROKE OF THE RECENT COLLECTION OF VULNERABILITIES, FOUNDED BY SECURITY FIRM CHECK POINT AND GROUPED TOGETHER UNDER THE CATCHY MONICKER "QUAD ROOTER." AS USUAL, MOST OF THE REPORTING HAS FOCUSED ON WORST-CASE SCENARIOS AND A SHOCKINGLY HUGE NUMBER OF POTENTIALLY VULNERABLE DEVICES — IN THIS CASE, AN ESTIMATED 900 MILLION.


1. It's a Qualcomm thing


Check Point specifically targeted Qualcomm due to its dominant position in the Android ecosystem. Because so many Android phones use Qualcomm hardware, the drivers Qualcomm contributes to the software on these phones make for an attractive target — a single set of vulnerabilities affecting a large proportion of the Android user base. (Specifically, the bugs affect networking, graphics and memory allocation code.)

Qualcomm's drivers are a big, attractive target.

All four of the exploits that make up Quad Rooter affect Qualcomm drivers, so if you have a phone that uses no Qualcomm hardware at all — for example, a Galaxy S6 or Note 5 (which uses Samsung's own Exynos processor and Shannon modem), you're not affected by this.

2. It’s serious, but there's no evidence of it being used in the wild

As the name suggests, QuadRoot is a collection of four exploits in Qualcomm's code which could allow a malicious app to gain root privileges — i.e. access to do basically anything on your phone. From there, you can dream up any number of nightmare scenarios: attackers listening in on phone calls, spying through your camera, pilfering financial details or locking down your data with ransomware.

No-one's talking about these exploits being used in the wild yet, which is a good thing. (Check Point estimates that the bad guys will have it packaged into functioning malware within three or four months.) However given the challenges involved in updating the software on the billion-plus Android devices out there, malware creators will have plenty of time to figure out a practical application.

But...



3. Chances are you're not actually "vulnerable"


QuadRooter is one of the many Android security issues that requires you to manually install an app. That means manually going into Security settings and toggling the "Unknown Sources" checkbox.

Given that Check Point first disclosed the vulnerabilities back in April, Google has almost certainly been scanning Play Store apps for these exploits for quite some time. That means you'll be fine if, like most people, you only download apps from the Play Store.

And even if you don't, Android's "Verify Apps" feature is designed to act as an additional layer of protection, scanning apps from third-party sources for known malware before you install. This feature is enabled by default in all Android versions since 2012's 4.2 Jelly Bean, and because it's part of Google Play Services, it's always updating. As of the most recent stats available, more than 90 percent of active Android devices are running version 4.2 or later.

We don't have explicit confirmation from Google that "Verify Apps" is scanning for QuadRooter, but given that Google was informed months ago, chances are it is. And if it is, Android will identify any QuadRooter-harboring app as harmful and show a big scary warning screen before letting you get anywhere near installing it.

In that case, are you still "vulnerable?" Well technically. You could conceivably go to Security settings, enable Unknown Sources, then ignore the full-screen warning that you're about to install malware and disable yet another security setting elsewhere. But at that point, to a large extent, it's on you.

4. Android security is hard, even with monthly patches


One interesting aspect of the QuadRooter saga is what it shows us about the Android security challenges that still remain, even in a world of monthly security patches. Three of the four vulnerabilities are fixed in the latest August 2016 patches, but one has apparently slipped through the cracks and won't be fixed until the September patch. That's cause for legitimate concern given that disclosure happened back in April.


Even once patches are issued, they need to go through device manufacturers and carriers before being pushed out to phones. And although some companies like Samsung, BlackBerry and (naturally) Google have been quick about making sure the latest patches are available, most of the folks making Android devices are nowhere near as timely — especially when it comes to older or lower-priced phones.

QuadRooter underscores how the ubiquity of Qualcomm-based Android devices makes them an attractive target, while the variety of hardware as a whole makes updating all of them near impossible.


5. We've been here before


Catchy marketing name? Check.
Big scary number of "vulnerable" devices? Check.
Free detection app peddled by security company with a product to sell? Check.
No evidence of use in the wild? Check.

Press at large ignoring the Play Store and Verify Apps as a roadblock against app-based exploits? Check.

It's the same dance we do every year around security conference time. In 2014 it was Fake ID. In 2015, it was Stage fright. Unfortunately, understanding of Android security issues in the media at large has remained woeful, and that means figures like the "900 million" affected bounce around the echo chamber without context.

If you're being smart about the apps you install, there's not much reason to worry about. And even if you're not, chances are Play Services and Verify Apps will have your back.
